Which metals don't rust

There is nothing worse than seeing the metal DIY creation that you crafted to perfection turn to rust! However, some metals are completely resistant to rusting or take a very long time to do so. This comes with a number of advantages like not having to carry out potentially costly repairs, having to replace the structure as the metal is no longer strong enough to provide the support needed. In some cases (like climbing frames), rusted metal can endanger the users.

Article in Brief

Metals which don’t rust include brass, copper, galvanised steel, aluminium and stainless steel

The Metal Store stocks a selection of rust-resistant metals, suitable for a wide range of use

What is rust and what causes it?

Rust is the common name for iron oxide, which is usually a reddish-brown colour and created when ferrous metals react with oxygen and water.

Essentially, rust is the chemicals which are created by this reaction. Both water and oxygen are needed to cause corrosion and because of that, metal will likely only rust if it is outdoors.

Here's a list of metals that don't rust...

Brass

Brass does not rust because it contains a negligible amount of iron, therefore no iron oxide (rust) can form. As it’s an alloy of copper and zinc, neither of which also don’t rust, brass is a very safe option when it comes to constructing your DIY projects. Brass is one of the best metals for decorative purposes, adding a premium and/or vintage feel to your creations (depending on the finish you choose) because of its colour.

Aluminium

Interestingly, aluminium is the most widespread metal on the planet, making up more than eight per cent of the Earth’s core mass as well as being the third most common chemical element after oxygen and silicon. When exposed to air, the metal develops a thin, hard aluminium oxide film, making it rust-resistant. While it is used in many industries, it is particularly popular in the automotive sector due to it being lightweight and flexible.

Copper

Copper will not rust for the same reason as brass, it contains only trace amounts of iron, meaning it's another great option for metal DIY creations. Because of its malleable qualities, copper is also very easy to work with, making it suitable for a wide range of projects from small home decor pieces like plates and photo frames to towel rails and tables. Again like brass, copper adds a vintage feel to your projects.

Galvanised Steel

While galvanised steel is not completely immune from rusting, it takes a long time to do so thanks to a thin layer of zinc it’s coated in as part of the galvanisation process. This makes it good for DIY projects because it gives the metal excellent abrasion and chip resistance. Galvanised steel is commonly used in the construction sector due to its strength in being able to stand up to adverse weather conditions.

Stainless Steel

Another metal which is highly resistant to corrosion is stainless steel. It contains a minimum of 10.5% chromium, which reacts with the oxygen in the air to form a protective layer that makes the material extremely defiant to rusting. It’s also strong, durable and versatile making it a popular choice for a variety of self-build creations. Another advantage is that the metal does not have pores that can trap bacteria, making it ideal building material for climbing frames, where hygiene is important.
